Elijah Lynes

Birth: about 1795, VT

Death: after 17 Jun 1880

Spouse: Olive Wheelock
Marriage: about 1826

  1. Irene Wheelock Lynes, born 19 Aug 1827, VT
  2. Olive Lynes, born 3 Jun 1832, NY
  3. Emily A. Lynes, born 3 Feb 1840, NY
  4. Silas W. Lynes, born 30 Dec 1845, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

The identity of his parents is not known. He may be related to the Elijah Lynes who, in 1800, lived in Bennington, Vermont, aged 26 to 44, with three boys under 10 in the household, and a female, likely his wife, aged 26 to 44.

Per the obituary of his son, Silas W. Lines, he moved to Michigan circa 1848.

In 1850, Elijah Lyons, 55, carpenter, born Vermont, was living in Independence, Oakland County, Michigan. His wife was not in the household, but the following children were enumerated: Olive Lyons, 17, born New York, Emily Lyons, 10, born New York, and Silas Lyons, 5, born New York.

In 1860, Elijah Lines, 75, carpenter, born Vermont, was living in Bloomfield, Oakland County, Michingan, with G. Ackerson, 35, born New York, Olive Ackerson, 27, born New York, and William E. Ackerson, 7, born Michigan.

In 1870, Elijah Lines, 75, retired farmer, born New York, was living with Silas Lines, 24, saw mill worker, born New York, and Ellen Lines, 20, keeping house, born Ohio. Per census record, Elijah and Ellen were married in Aug 1869.

In 1880, Elijah Lines, widower, age 80, was living in Independence, Oakland Co, Michigan, with head of houshold William Cook, 24, and his wife Amelia Cook, 21. Elijah was marked as the uncle of William Cook. Also in the household was Cornelia Lewis, 55, mother in law of William Cook.

Research Notes for Elijah Lynes:

His surname was variously spelled Lines, Lynes, and Lyons. He signed his name 'Lynes' in an Erie County deed, dated 6 Oct 1830.1

In 1880 he was living in Independence, in the household of William Cook, his nephew, whose wife was Amelia Lewis. Also in the household was Cornelia Lewis, mother of Amelia. Per Cornelia's death certificate, her parents were Elijah Lines and Candice Kendall, both born in New York - suggesting that Cornelia may have been Elijah's sister (or half sister), both possibly children of Elijah Lines. Given the fact that Elijah was a good 25 years older than Cornelia, it is possible that Cornelia was a half sister, by a later wife of their supposed father - the elder Elijah Lines.2

Irene Wheelock Lynes

Birth: 19 Aug 1827, VT

Death: 28 Mar 1896, Caro, Tuscola Co, MI

Father: Elijah Lynes
Mother: Olive Wheelock

Spouse: Sherman Judd Lobdell
Marriage: about 1843, Whites Corners, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

Research Notes for Irene Lynes:

The Lobdell genealogy gives their marriage date as 1 Oct 1835, in Whites Corner, Erie County, New York. That date can't be correct, otherwise Irene would have been married at age 8. Based on census records, it seems more likely that the marriage date was around 1843, based on the age of her eldest child.1

In 1850 she was 22, born New York, living in Independence, Oakland, Michigan, with Sherman Lobdel, 32, Franklin Y Lobdel, 5, and Francis Lobdel, 3.

In 1860 Irena Lobdell was 33, born New York, living in Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan, with Sherman Lobdell, 43, born New York, Franklin, 15, born New York, Francis, 13, born Michigan, Eliza, 10, Salon, 6, Emily, 4, and Charles, 1, all surname Lobdell, born in Michigan.

In 1870, Rena Lobdel was 41, born Vermont, living in Genesee, Genesee County, Michigan, with Sherman Lobdel, 53, born New York, Emma Lobdell, 14, born Michigan, and Charly Lobdell, 17, born Michigan.

In 1880, Rena Lobdell, 52, born New York, was living again in Genesee, with Sherman Lobdell, 63, born Connecticut. Rena's father was born in Vermont, her mother in Connecticut.
